At Texas, if you intentional single preference, you are not eligilble for GP (unless, of course, you were only invited to one pref).

Rentals?
Rentals for tables, chairs, stages, china and glass wear for preference, sound and light equipment, white tent to go in front of the house to keep the sun off the PNM as they wait to enter the house, the list could go on and on.

But those times are passing. Things are a little more under control and getting better each year.

I now have a visual of a bunch of perfectly coiffed girls, in cute pink or black sundresses jumping in a giant inflatable castle (air conditioned, of course) while asking questions like "so what's your major?" and "tell me about your philanthropy," or "does everyone go to Texas-OU together?"

LOL.

I remember Texas Gal posting on TWoP, and she said that one year while she was an active, the ADPis rented out a lion for rush and put it in their foyer! :eek:

I believe she also said that rush has calmed down quite a bit since then, however.

WOW! A real life lion?! That's pretty spiffy! I'm going to reccommend that to our chapter! (j/k! ;) )

Ew - wouldn't it smell? Smelly lions and Texas ADPis do not go together, in my mind. :)

I know everyone thinks that DGMarie's comment was funny but it is also realistic. At USC several chapters have been renting moon bounces for Bid Day for a few years.

The cost of china, crystal, tables, chairs, tents, glasses, silverware, and everything else adds up when you have close to 200 actives and between 500 and 1000 rushees. Of course, this varies by campus, but a lot of schools have not gotten rid of real "frills" in recruitment.

To add to this hijacking...I remember reading in The Angelos one time that there was a chapter that rented a pirate ship to put in their front yard for rush. Hee!

(That don't impress me much....now, if the chapter could have Johnny Depp on the pirate ship, well..... :) )

OK, I can understand renting tents, moon bounces and even chairs and tables...but I'm confused about the silver and crystal. We had several sets of "punch-ware" for rush and a silver tea service. Wouldn't a large house have china, crystal and silver donated over the years by alumnae? I realize it is a lot, but as large as the houses are there should be room to store it.

Of course I don't know the complete inventories of all of the chapters at UT, but I would venture to say that none of them have 900 glasses for ice water to accomodate all of the women they see during open house.

Now, some of you are wondering, well, can't you wash them between parties. Well, you can and some chapters do but why wash when you can rent. That lipstick is hard to remove!

Others of you would say, "glasses", what happened to dixie cups... well, my dear, that just isn't "done" at UT.

A lion? Holy cow! I can only imagine what would happen if we tried to bring owls into our rounds... they'd be all pissy, flying around everywhere, pooping on people, throwing up mouse bones... it'd be ugly.

What about AEPhi... don't they have the giraffe? They'd have to have a pretty high ceiling.

At least you don't have to rent a moon. ;)
